This unlined robe (J., hitoe) is a kind of undergarment. Crimson was very popular for undergarments, but other colors were also used, depending on factors such as the season or the effect when combined with layers of different colors. This robe of twill damask (J., kata-aya) with a motif of auspicious lozenges woven on a ground of salmon pink is typical of those worn by women.
