This portrait had traditionally been presumed to be the warlord Ashikaga Takauji (1305-58). However, the stylized signature on the upper half of the scroll being that his son Ashikaga Yoshiakira (1330-67) has brought up questions as to why Yoshiakira would place his stylized signature above his father’s portrait and theories that the figure may be the warrior Ko no Moronao (d. 1351), who served Takauji. This vivid depiction shows him as a warrior after a fierce battle with his topknot undone, carrying a bent arrow on his back and an unsheathed sword over his shoulder.
