Yan Hui had a pen name "Chiuyueh (autumn moon)". He was a painter of dôshaku jinbutsuga (painting that includes figures) and representative of the period from the Southern Song dynasty to the Yuan dynasty. This work depicts Han-shan, who broke into a big smile eerily in a dim light, and Shi-de; something bizarre and unique to the Yan Hui school in the Yuan dynasty is seen in the expression. Its noble origin involves being the imperial property of Higashiyama, and later handed down to the Ishiyama Hongan temple by Oda Nobunaga. Previously owned by the Kawasaki clam.
