This work, where an angler in a small boat is drawn in a vast and cold river, makes the most of the effects of margin, and is said to be one of the masterpieces of Ma Yuan's school. However, it can be seen that pieces of silk are put together at a place little bit above the boat, indicating the possibility that it may have been a work painted on a larger screen. It has a seal indicating that it belonged to the second house of an empress of the Southern Song dynasty.
