According to modern research, this screen, although not accompanied by the artist's seals, is well acknowledged as a representative work from the last years of Hishikawa Moronobu, who is called the founder of Ukiyoe. It is composed of two parts: an entrance to a theater leading in to the stage and the spectators' seats of the theater are painted on the right side screens, and the dressing room and the adjacent resting booth of the theater are painted on the left side screens. The scene is populated with a total of 285 lively people painted in Moronobu's unique style.
