Chijue Daochong (J., Chizetsu Dochu, 1169-1250), from Wuxin (Changjiang, Sichuan Province), was a renowned Chan (J., Zen) master of the Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279) along with the eminent Chan master Wuzhun Shifan (J., Bujun Shiban, 1178-1249). Daochong, who was the dharma heir of Mian Xianjie (J., Mittan Kanketsu, 1118-86), served as the head of monasteries such as Tiantong shan, Lingyin si, and Jinshan. Daochong wrote this Chan calligraphy (J., bokuseki), a postscript to a sermon by the Chinese Linchi (J., Rinzai) Chan master Dahui Zonggao (J., Daie Sogo, 1089-1163), at the age of seventy-three.
