Shudoan was born in Haiyan (Zhejiang Province). He became a painter of the Imperial Painting Academy during the Seitoku era (1506 to 1521) in the Ming period and drew many sansuiga (mountain and water paintings), for which he was granted the 欽賜一樵図書 Seal. He is a painter representing the late Seppa school that features rough brushwork in black ink. This picture is well known as an excellent piece of snow landscape and one of the best by Shudoan. This was previously possessed by Manshuin Temple.
