`Soga Monogatari' is a military epic with the motif, "vengeance by the brothers Soga," which took place at a large-scale hunt (Fuji no Makigari) on May 28, 1193, in the early Kamakura period. The author is unknown, and there are many variants. Among these variants, this Manabon (a book written only in kanji) `Sogamonogatari' is the oldest and most frequently referenced book. The text of `Sogamonogatari' can be roughly divided into two categories: manabon (10 volumes) and kanabon (written in kana, there are 10-volume, 11-volume, and 12-volume types and some have an additional Filial Piety volume. While there are some others where manabon (Honmonji-bon) are re-written in kana, that is, something between manabon and kanabon, a separate category is not formed for them since they are positioned below the manabon text).
This is the oldest transcription of manabon with a transcription postscript of 1546. Among kanabon, the one created in the Muromachi period with a postscript, which says that it was donated by Akashi Nagayuki on November 2, 1539 (Taisanji-bon), is the oldest. This was designated an important cultural property on June 27, 1959.
