Emperor Fushimi (1265–1317) is the second son of Emperor Gofukakusa and the 92nd emperor of Japan. Emperor Fushimi loved waka (31-syllable Japanese poem) and ordered Kyogoku Tamekane to select poems for Gyokuyo Wakashu (an anthology of waka poems). For Emperor's own poems, 294 poems are included in Shin Gosen Wakashu and other Imperial anthologies. This scroll contains a total of 50 poems by Emperor Fushimi, including 30 summer poems, 10 love poems, and 10 others (from "Murasame to Ukinimo"). It seems that this was originally part of a collection of poems, including spring, autumn, and winter poems. This scroll fully displays the flowing and elegant writing style, which can also be found in Chikumagire, of this Emperor known as one of the best calligraphers in the Imperial history of Japan.
