Emperor Fushimi was a renowned calligrapher in the mid-Kamakura period, an equal of Fujiwara no Yukinari in the Heian period. He was good at both kanji and kana and much of his calligraphy still remains now. This letter is a long one that starts with "宮出家事、所存之趣云々 (About Imperial Prince's entering the priesthood)," which seems to refer to the Emperor's sixth child, Prince Songo Nyudo's (1300–1359) becoming a priest. Since it was in 1312 when the prince became a priest, it follows that this was written by Emperor Fushimi when he was 48 years old.
