This is a letter that Yoshitsune (1169 – 1206) wrote to his father Kanezane (1149 – 1207) asking about old customs and manners, including what to wear, regarding the ceremony to celebrate his son Michiie's (1193 –1252) coming of age. Kanezane wrote the answers to each question in the margins of the letter. Yoshitsune also wrote that the date of Michiie's entering the shrine could be on the fifth if the third was not convenient for Kanezane, which shows the feelings of a father looking forward to his son's coming of age.
Gokyogoku Yoshitsune (Kujo Yoshitsune) is a grandson of Fujiwara no Tadamichi, founder of the Hosshoji school (calligraphy). Yoshitsune had associations with Fujiwara no Toshinari and Sadaie and his own writing style led to the inception of the Gokyogoku school. The Gokyogoku school is the calligraphy school that succeeded and developed the Hosshoji school.
