In the green and blue field unfolding with gentle ups and downs over the ground color of gold pigment, autumn flowers of bush clover, cotton rose, and patrinia are in full bloom. The rhythmical succession of the mounds stretching over the two screens, along with the dynamic arrangement of the flowers, creates the impression of an extensive space that incites the viewer to imagine the clear sky of autumn.
The signature-seal reads "Sousetsu Hokkyō," and an Inen round seal in red ink (the seal used by Tawaraya Soutatsu and his school) suggest that after Tawaraya Soutatsu passed away, Sousetsu succeeded the studio and became Hokkyō (title for excellent painters and high-class monks). It is known that this piece was produced later than the period between Kanei 16 and Kanei 19 (1639-1642). The composition is such that it still makes a continuous picture when the right and left panels are switched.
