This is a drawing of the manor (owned by Daijo-in Sub-temple of Kohfukuji Temple) that existed in the present-day around Otogi Town, Tenri City. The top of the map is south and gridlines that indicate the lots of fields (tsubo) in the checkerboard-like grid (jori) are drawn. Numbers of field such as “X jo(条) Y ri(里) Z tsubo(坪)” can be seen in the southwest or northwest corner of each field, as well as the name of the place such as the “Side of Kodono” near the center of the top of the field. Each field is divided into ten lots, which are longer than they are wide (the area of each lot is a “tan (反)”) and for each tan the name of the tiller and the amount of tax are written (the tax is generally one to (斗) per tan). Especially attractive in this map are two shrine gates (tori’i). Both seem to be those found at the approach (san do) to Kasuga Jinja Shrine. The site of Kasuga Jinja Shrine moved to Yatogi Jinja Shrine in the Edo period (1603–1868) and in the place near the center of the map where the red shrine gates is drawn, a red shrine gate that was set up at the end of the Edo period can be found to this day. On the back of this map, some texts related to the administration of the manor of Daijo-in Sub-temple in Otogi Town (Otsuki no sho) can be found. As one of them is dated Bun’ei 2 (1265), it proves that this map was created after Bun’ei 2, possibly immediately thereafter.
