Mumyosho is a book on poetry, including ancient waka practices, poets' anecdotes and sayings, and knowledge regarding chanting and the creation of poems, which was written by Kamo no Chomei in his later years. If this was written before or after Hojoki is unknown, but it is thought that this book was written during the period from 1211 to the death of Chomei in 1216. The book comprises approximately 80 passages (dan) and is most narrative among other books on poetry of the same period. The story of "Masuho no susuki" is famous and mentioned in the 188th passage of `Tsurezuregusa'. It originally comprised two volumes.
While currently there are over six types of transcriptions of Mumyosho, this one is the oldest existing transcription with clear provenance. It is believed that the time when this transcription was created is close to the time when Kamo no Chomei wrote this book. This was designated an important cultural property on February 18, 1949.
