Despite the shape of double-layered hanging containers unique to Japan, Aoki Mokubei has created this one totally in the Chinese style and wrote the name "青花提梁層々盂"on the lid of a box for this work. As the seal "Made by Kokikan (one of the pseudonyms of Mokubei)" shows, the origin of his work lies in the pottery of the Ming period and the dragon and wave motif of the Wanli (1573 – 1619) period during the Ming Dynasty is adopted as the main motif design for this work. The areas on the lid and body ridgelines where glaze has come off are a deliberate reproduction of the exfoliation of glaze characteristic of Chinese Seika (blue and white) ware.
